Why NSW and Victoria Have Different Electricity Emission Factors
2 min readJanuary 28, 2026
You might notice that 1000kWh of electricity in Victoria creates more carbon than 1000kWh in Tasmania. Why?
The Grid Mix
Australia's electricity grid is state-based. The carbon intensity depends on how that state generates power:
- Victoria: Historically relied on brown coal (higher emissions), though renewables are growing fast.
- NSW: Black coal mix (high emissions).
- Tasmania: Mostly hydro-electric (very low emissions).
- SA: High percentage of wind/solar (lower emissions).
Our Calculator Auto-Adjusts
The Carbon Data Registry automatically applies the correct NGA State Factor based on the state you select. You don't need to do the math—we ensure your report is locally accurate.
