Do Small Businesses Need to Report to NGER?

3 min readJanuary 28, 2026

There is often confusion between the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme and the requests you get from clients.

What is NGER?

NGER is Australia's mandatory federal reporting framework. However, it typically only applies to large corporate entities emitting over 50,000 tonnes of CO2e per year.

Most small businesses do NOT need to report directly to NGER.

So why do I need a certificate?

While you don't report to the government, your clients (who likely do report to NGER or comparable frameworks like TCFD) need data from you to fulfill their own obligations.

By providing a Carbon Data Registry certificate, you are satisfying a commercial contract requirement, not a direct federal mandate upon your business.
