Truck vs Train: Transport Logistics Emissions Explained

4 min readJanuary 28, 2026

Logistics companies are facing huge pressure from retailers (like Coles, Woolworths, and Amazon) to report emissions per kilometer or per item delivered.

The Emissions Hierarchy

Generally, emissions per tonne-kilometer look like this:

  • Air Freight: Highest emissions (fastest)
  • Road Freight (Truck): Medium-High
  • Rail Freight: Low (roughly 10x less than road)
  • Sea Freight: Lowest

Calculating Scope 1 for Fleets

If you own the trucks, it's Scope 1. You ideally want to track Litres of Diesel Consumed rather than relying on standard distances. This rewards your drivers for efficient driving (less idling, smoother braking).

Input your total annual diesel litres into our calculator to get your fleet's certified carbon total.
